COOPERSTOWN _ Ruth N.
Johnson, a former resident of Yonkers, and mother ofKenneth A. Johnson of Cooperstown, died in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Otsego Manor. She was 84. Born Feb. 27, 1927, in Pottsville, Pa., she was a daughter of Joseph and Evelda (Stoops) Martin.
After attending school, she went to work in Philadelphia, Pa., at a war plant that manufactured uniforms for the military.
On Feb. 15, 1945, Ruth married Algot J. Johnson in Upper Darby, Pa. The couple had planned on being married a day earlier-Valentine’s Daybut Algot was serving in the United States Navy and his ship was one day late getting into port.
They settled in Yonkers, and for many years Ruth served as a cafeteria manager for the New York City Board of Education.
She was a beloved and devoted member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Yonkers.
Ruth is survived by one son, Kenneth A. Johnson, a faculty member at SUNY Oneonta, who resides in Cooperstown.
She was predeceased by her husband, Algot, who died July 19, 1986; two sons, Clifford M. Johnson, who passed away in 1996, at the age of 40, and Robert A. Johnson, who passed away in 1995, at the age of 49; and her 15 siblings. A memorial service will be offered at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Yonkers, with the Rev’d Robert A. Boehler, pastor, officiating.
Ruth’s remains will be placed in the Chapel Columbarium in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
