Rosemary's Story

Rosemary T. O’Donnell, a longtime resident of Pearl River, died Sunday morning, June 27, 2010, at Otsego Manor. She was 85.
Born March 31, 1925, in New York City, Rosemary was the daughter of Joseph and Bella (Christie) Herzog.
She graduated from St. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic High School and then attended Hunter College in New York City.
On April 20, 1947, Rosemary married Thomas D. O’Donnell II. She then devoted her life to caring for her home and raising their family of seven children.
For many years, Rosemary made her home in Pearl River. During that time she was employed as a clerk and secretary at Lederle Laboratories, a pharmaceutical company located in Pearl River.
After her children were grown and on their own, Rosemary returned to college, and received an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science from Rockland County Community College.
Proud of her Irish heritage, Rosemary was a devout Roman Catholic and was a communicant of St. Aedans Roman Catholic Church in Pearl River. Rosemary later relocated to Cooperstown, where she became a member of St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church. In addition to practicing her faith, Rosemary was an active member in Al-Anon for many years and was a founder of a local chapter.
Rosemary is survived by her seven children, Patricia Maul and her husband, Robert, of Westwood, N.J., Joan Marie Nicols and her husband, Hank, of Cooperstown, Kathleen O’Donnell and her husband, Steven Nicols, of Hartwick, Thomas O’Donnell III of Pearl River, Barbara Siana and her husband, Bob, of Enfield, Conn., Dennis O’Donnell and his wife, DonnaLynn, of West Milford, N.J., and Brian O’Donnell and his wife, Jean, of Cornwall. Rosemary is also survived by her grandchildren, Maureen, Shaun and Matthew Maul, Jena Nicols Curtis and her husband, Todd, Diana Nicols diLorenzo and her husband, Mark, Christi O’Donnell and her partner, Julie Campbell, Thomas O’Donnell IV, Patrick and Krista Siana, and Caitlin, Megan and Devin O’Donnell. Rosemary currently has seven great-grandchildren, Victoria and Zachary Curtis, Tess, Lincoln and Tara Nicols diLorenzo, and Ethan and Lee diLorenzo. She is also survived by her goddaughter, Karin Agovino; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Thomas D. O’Donnell II, Rosemary was predeceased by her beloved grandchildren, Tara Elizabeth Siana and Henry Joseph Nicols; her brother, Thomas Herzog; and her daughter-in-law, Terry Kannry O’Donnell.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2010, at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding. The Service of Committal and Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown.
Friends called and paid their respects at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., when Rosemary’s family was in attendance. A Vigil Service was offered at 3:45 Wednesday afternoon at the funeral home with Fr. Rosson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Residents’ Activity Fund at Otsego Manor, 128 Phoenix Mills Cross Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or the National Hemophilia Foundation, 116 West 32nd St., 11th Floor, New York, NY 10001. Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
