Richard C.'s Story
FREDERICK, Md. - Richard C. Thornton, 70, died May 11, 2016, at Golden Living Center in Frederick, Maryland, following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the son of Andrew and Marguerite Thornton.
He spent his childhood in Springville, Pennsylvania. After attending East Stroudsburg State College, he received his master's degree in French from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. He taught French and Spanish for 35 years, finishing his career at Cooperstown Central School in Cooperstown.
He was a loving family man who will be remembered by family and friends alike for his outgoing personality, caring nature and great sense of humor. He was an avid tennis player who enjoyed playing, coaching and participating in tournaments.
He is survived by his wife, Rose-Mary; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Thornton and Patrick Boyton; grandson, Will; sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Gary Francis; mother-in-law, Mary Yurecka; brother-in-law, Rick Yurecka; aunt, Francis Brooks; two nieces; one nephew; and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
