Nicholas John Lavrinos, 84, of Fly Creek, died Sunday evening, Dec. 19, 2010, at Otsego Manor.
He was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Jamaica, Queens, the son of Paul Nicholas Lavrinos and Caroline Elizabeth (Loeser) Lavrinos.
After graduating from Jamaica High School in 1944, Nick served in the United States Navy and served as a radio man aboard a destroyer. Upon completion of his military service Nick briefly attended Cornell University, but left to work with his father in his construction business.
As a union cement finisher Nick worked with his father on many construction projects. On Sept. 24, 1957, Nick married Alice Marie Chase in a ceremony at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown.
After living in the village, they later settled in Fly Creek, where he served at one time with the Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
For 28 years Nick worked in maintenance at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, beginning April 1, 1962, and retiring April 1, 1990. He was always proud of his years of dedicated service doing a job he truly loved.
Nick was a very intelligent yet unassuming individual who possessed an incredible memory. Names, dates and places could be recalled in an instant. He always enjoyed New York Times crossword puzzles and even aspired to be on Jeopardy. He also liked music, especially from the 30s and 40s.
An advocate of nature, he had an immense love and respect for all living things.
He enjoyed gardening, and in the summer months enjoyed working in his vegetable garden. Nick will be remembered as an excellent provider.
Nick is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alice, of Fly Creek, and their two sons, Nicholas Paul Lavrinos and his wife, Debra Clark of Otego, and Thomas John Lavrinos of Fly Creek; and one stepgranddaughter, Kaitlin Henderson of Otego.
A service in remembrance of the life of Nick Lavrinos will be offered at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with Pastor Mitchell Spring of Spirit and Truth Christian Assembly in West Oneonta, officiating.
The family will be in attendance to receive friends at the funeral home Thursday afternoon from 4 to 5 p.m. and immediately following the service.
