Mary's Story

Mary Jane (Jari) Whitesell Mogavero, born Oct. 27, 1924, in Lovell, Maine, raised in Kingwood, W.Va., died Saturday, April 17, 2010, in St. Petersburg, Fla., after an extended illness.
Survived by daughter, Mary Lu (Dale) English; sons, Joseph, Michael, Patrick (JoAnn), Peter (Tammy) Mogavero; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Arcangelo Anthony (Arch) Mogavero; parents, Mary Louise (King) and Gamaliel Whitesell; mother- in-law and father-in-law, Lucia (Cimino) and Joseph Anthony Mogavero; sisters and their husbands, Betti (Jim) Watson, Gaye (Armando) Llanes; brothers-in-law. Joseph A. Jr., and Salvatore Mogavero; and infant son, John Edward Mogavero. Jari was a graduate of Kingwood High School and attended Potomac State College of West Virginia University.
She joined the Navy (WAVES) in November 1944, and served as a Pharmacist 1st Class at Bethesda and Bainbridge Naval Hospitals during World War II. After her discharge in 1947, she continued her studies at Columbia University _ Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1949.
She was employed as a registered nurse by Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, and then the University of Cincinnati, Wyoming Medical Center, in Cincinnati, Ohio. While living in Cincinnati, she took postgraduate classes at Xavier University.
In 1984, Jari and Arch retired and moved to Florida. Jari was an active member of her community.
She volunteered in the St. Pete Beach City offices for many years; she also volunteered at the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum; she was an active member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Boca Ciega Chapter.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Beach Memorial Chapel (www.beachmemorial.com.) A funeral Mass will be held at St. John Vianney in St. Pete Beach at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 23, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Florida Suncoast Hospice.
Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney at a later date.
