John A. Nelson
COOPERSTOWN — John A. Nelson, 78, of Springfield, passed away on March 19, 2015 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown after a brief illness.
John was born in Cooperstown on Aug. 7, 1936. He was the son of Edwin J. and Mary Imogene (Thompson) Nelson of Cherry Valley and Sea Cliff. While at Sea Cliff High School, he was involved in numerous activities and was an accomplished pianist. He was the state high jump champion in his senior year. He went on to play Division I soccer and basketball at Cornell University where he was a first-team All-American in soccer as a senior. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture, Class of 1958.
John married Nancy Stone, of Bethesda, Md., on March 28, 1959. They met while at Cornell and operated dairy farms in Maryland and New York before settling on their current farm, Rock Spring Farm, in 1972.
John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy; his daughters, Peggy (Alan) Copenhaver and Cathy (David) Hoyda; his sons, Mark Nelson and Michael (Karin) Nelson; and five grandchildren, Matthew and Julia Hoyda, Bryce Copenhaver and Wriley and Stuart Nelson. He is also survived by his sister, Sandra J. Theimer, and his cousins, Susann (Roger) Spidle, Rich (Susan) Nelson and Joan Jewell and numerous other cousins. His aunt, Florence Thompson, survives at the age of 101.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law, Robert Theimer. His Thompson ancestors survived the Cherry Valley Massacre.
A graveside service will be held this summer at the convenience of the family. Memorial gifts may be donated to the Springfield Fire Department or the Daily Bread Food Pantry of Cherry Valley.
