Gertrude's Story

Gertrude Brisack Worrall, 97, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was born March 5, 1913, at The Thanksgiving Hospital in Cooperstown, a daughter of Allen G. and Goldie (Thompson) Brisack.
She was first married to Joseph C. Worrall in 1931, in New Jersey. Joseph died Aug. 17, 1965. She later married Peter L. Worrall on Sept. 28, 1976, in Cooperstown. Peter died on Feb. 4, 1997.
Raised in Cooperstown, Gertrude graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1931, and attended nursing school. She was employed for many years as a private nurse for local families.
After moving to Detroit, Mich., she was a nurse at Rogers General Hospital. In 1951, the Worralls returned to Cooperstown, and she began working for the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital. Mrs. Worrall was a well-known pediatric nurse, caring for the children involved in the pediatric bone marrow transplant trials headed by Doctors E. Donnall Thomas and Joseph Ferrebee. She will also be remembered as a kind and compassionate nurse in the pediatric clinic.
In 1976, Gertrude retired from nursing and she and Peter moved to Florida, returning to Cooperstown in 1993.
Gertrude was baptized at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown by the Rev’d. Ralph Birdsall. She remained a member of the church throughout her life and before her death was the oldest member of the church.
Gertrude was also a member of the Native Daughters of Cooperstown, and enjoyed attending the annual luncheons with her daughters, Joan and Jean.
She was a Past Matron of the Otsego-Hartwick-Arbutus Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star in Cooperstown. Gertrude was particularly skilled with the knitting needle and crochet hook, although she mastered many other crafts in her lifetime.
She is survived by her daughters, Joan W. White and Jean W. Johnson, both of Cooperstown; and a sister, Beatrice I. Hogue of Solomon’s Island, Md. She had seven grandchildren, Ann (Michael) Mithoefer, Debbie (John) Mullet, Robin (Rod) Torrence, Brian (Andrea) Jacobson, Tim (Vicki) Johnson, Mark (Jane) Jacobson and Meghan (Rob) King. She had 16 great-grandchildren; and three greatgreat- grandchildren; in addition to five stepchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved kitty, Ollie. Several of her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren affectionately called her “Tanny.”
She was predeceased by a brother, Allen (Bud) Brisack; a sister-in-law, Alice Brisack; a brother-in-law, William T. Hogue; and sons-in-law, Richard A. White and Richard E. Johnson.
The Office of the Burial of the Dead (Rite One) with The Holy Eucharist will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at Christ Church, Cooperstown, with the Rev’d. Mark A. Michael, rector, officiating. The service of Committal and Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Church All Souls Fund, 69 Fair St., Cooperstown, NY 13326 or Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326. Arrangements are under the guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
