Mrs. Evelyn L. Mateunas, a resident of Christian Hill, since 1946, passed into the eternal care of God on Monday evening, Sept. 6, 2010, at Otsego Manor. She was 84.
Born Aug. 19, 1926, at home in Frankfort, she was a daughter of Prosper and Caroline (Seelbach) Schorer.
In her youth, she attended school in Frankfort, until the eighth grade, at which point she began attending East Frankfort School. After one year, she went to Ilion High School, but left just before beginning her senior year.
Evelyn then went to work in the offices of the M.H. Rencken Dairy in Frankfort and later was employed in Ilion with Remington Rand, a manufacturer of office equipment, as well as at a factory in Herkimer.
A year later, Evelyn entered into employment at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown where she served for several years as a nurse’s aide. She trained to become a licensed practical nurse, and served as such until her retirement in the early 1980s.
Evelyn was married on Oct. 14, 1946, in the Frankfort Methodist Church to Peter J. Mateunas, and they made their home on Mateunas Road on Christian Hill. Peter predeceased her on Sept. 25, 1992.
Throughout her life, Evelyn enjoyed her membership in the Rebekah Lodge in Frankfort, and was fond of knitting and crocheting. She was currently a member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, having joined in 1955.
Evelyn is survived by one son, Peter S. Mateunas, and his wife, Cynthia, of Christian Hill; one grandson, Christopher Mateunas of Christian Hill; one sister, Mrs. Dawn Shipman and her husband, Gerald, of Ilion; three brothers, Harold Schorer and his wife, Olga, of Cedarville, Ronald Schorer and his wife, Joan, of Mohawk, and Steve Schorer and his wife, Shirley, of Ilion; three sisters-in-law, Debbie Schorer of Ilion, Lorraine Collar of Hartwick, and Maggie Schorer of Ilion; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Evelyn was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and John (“Jack”) Schorer; and a sister-inlaw, Mary Schorer.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010.
A Funeral Service will be offered at noon Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Thomas E. Pullyblank, pastor, officiating.
At a later date, Evelyn will be privately laid to rest with her husband, Peter, in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.
As an alternative to flowers, Evelyn’s family suggests that memorial donations be made to either the Hartwick Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 208, Hartwick, NY 13348 or the Otsego Manor Activities Fund for the benefit of the Country Meadows Neighborhood, 128 Phoenix Mills Cross Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.
Arrangements are under the guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
