Ellen's Story

_ Ellen G. Hankin,
lovingly known as
“Madre,” passed
away peacefully
Monday morning,
June 13, 2011, at
her home, the Clara
Welch Thanksgiving
Home. She was 95.
Ellen was born April 23,
1916, in New York City, the
daughter of John and Mabel
She graduated from Rider
College in 1936, and then
earned her Doctorate at
Florida State University. She
retired from teaching at age
70, but continued to teach
everyone she met by sharing
her great philosophies and
During her years teaching
in the early 1960s, Ellen met
her second husband, Edward
K. Hankin and they married
in 1967.
Ed and Ellen became world
travelers and together they
took many trips around the
globe. She especially loved
the Alps, the ocean cruises,
and Victoria.
Ellen and her first husband,
Eugene G. Butler, ran
the Hickory Grove Inn in
Cooperstown, where, in her
beautiful clothes and high
heels, she was well-known
as the best dressed hostess
ever seen.
Ellen moved back to Cooperstown
in 1988, when her
husband, Ed, became ill.
She became very active
with the Cooperstown Food
Pantry and Clothing Bank
where she spent almost
every day checking stock,
restocking and most importantly,
helping families.
She had a very
big heart and everyone
who knew
her loved her.
Dear Madre
thought of everyone
else first before
Ellen is survived
by her children, Barbara
Lynn Shank of Johnson City
and David K. Butler Sr. and
his wife, Mary of Cooperstown;
10 grandchildren;
and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased in
life by her first husband,
Eugene G. Butler in 1979;
her second husband, Edward
K. Hankin in 1990; and
her great-granddaughter,
Emily Shank in 2004.
Ellen’s family would like

and support they gave
to Ellen and her family
throughout her six years at
the home and throughout
this difficult time.
