COOPERSTOWN − Donald William Cornell died in the morning hours of Sunday, June 12, 2011, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi. He was 77.
Born Aug. 31, 1933, in Walton, he was a son of the late Ernest W. and Vivian M. (Baxter) Cornell.
He attended schools in Utica and Canajoharie, and proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to1957.
For many years, Don tendedbar in the Tap Room at The Tunnicliff Inn in Cooperstown, where he made many lifelong friendships.
After his retirement, Don enjoyed watching baseball games at Doubleday Field.
He was a member of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 and the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.
7128 in Cooperstown. Don will be most remembered for his quick wit, happy demeanor and his love for baseball.
Don is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold (“Butch”) and Kathy Cornell of Utica and Richard (“Dick”) and Suzanne Cornell of Chandler, Ariz.; along with many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and greatnephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian Pierce; his parents, Ernest and Vivian Cornell; his brother, Robert (“Bob”) Cornell; and his sister, Beverly Olmstead.
Per Don’s wishes, there will be no funeral or calling hours. A gathering to remember Don will take place later in the year at the family’s convenience.
