Audrey's Story

FLY CREEK _ Mrs. Audrey B. Skubitz, formerly of Fly Creek, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 10, 2010, at Otsego Manor. She was 87. Born Audrey Juanita Bolton on Nov. 27, 1922, in the Town of Burlington, she was a daughter of Harold D. and Elnora Marie (Hull) Bolton. A graduate of Edmeston Central School, she worked at the Scintilla Plant during World War II.
On Oct. 30, 1943, Audrey married William Skubitz in Hartwick. Together, Audrey and Bill operated the Fly Creek Hotel from 1960, until Bill retired in April 1970.
For many years, Audrey was also employed as a lab technician at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, where she drew blood for 17 years. She later served as a courier for Bassett, collecting and delivering blood.
Baptized into the Baptist faith, Audrey was currently a member of Light Walkers Baptist Church in Morris and the First Baptist Church of Burlington. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 579 of Cooperstown and was a Sister in a Rebekah Lodge.
Audrey will be remembered as a person who always loved being with people, especially her nieces and nephews. An avid card player and bowler, she also enjoyed many good times at Cornfield Hall, especially dancing polkas.
Audrey is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Sheila Ross and her husband, William, of Fly Creek, and their family; one brother, Charles D. Bolton and his wife, Elizabeth, of Burlington; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Albert A. (Elaine) Bolton Sr. of Fly Creek, Mrs. Bruce H. (Dorothy) Bolton of Burlington, and Mrs. Frank (Irene) Skubitz of Richfield Springs; one brotherin- law, Robert Gillin, of Milford, N.H.; many nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Gail (Arlene) Lewis.
She was predeceased by her husband, William, who died March 9, 1987; two sisters, Miss Rebecca P. Bolton and Mrs. Virginia E. Gillin; and three brothers, Bruce H. Bolton, Albert A. Bolton Sr. and Rovello R. Bolton.
Audrey’s family extends their grateful appreciation to everyone at Otsego Manor, especially the staff on Serenity Place, and those from Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care for their kind, compassionate and understanding care.
Family and friends paid their respects from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
A Funeral Service was offered at the funeral home on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John C. Young officiating.
The Service of Committal and Burial followed in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.
For those who so desire, Audrey’s family suggests that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 579, c/o The Cooperstown Veterans Club, 60 Main St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.
Arrangements were under the guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
